CAROLINA BEACH — As Labor Day approaches, residents of southeastern North Carolina prepare for the seasonal closure of Britts Donuts, a cherished institution on Pleasure Island. The donut shop, a local favorite, signals the end of summer and the start of a quieter period on the Carolina Beach boardwalk.
Britts Donuts, which opens each March to unofficially mark the beginning of spring and the tourist season, will close after Labor Day weekend. This closing marks the onset of what locals call “locals’ summer.” During this time, the beaches are less crowded, and residents stock up on donuts to last through the fall and winter months, until the shop reopens for the 2025 season.
For its final weekend, Britts Donuts will operate on the following schedule, with hours potentially adjusted based on donut availability:
Friday, Sept. 6: 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 7: 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 8: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Established in 1939 and owned by Bobby Nivens, Britts Donuts has garnered national recognition from Food & Wine, Our State, Saveur, and National Geographic. Known for its iconic glazed donuts, the shop only accepts cash. Each season, long lines form along the boardwalk, reflecting the enduring popularity of this local treasure.
