HONOLULU (Island News) — Holey Grail Donuts has announced the next installment of its “Breaking Bread” series, a collaboration with Taiwanese soul food chef David Kuo, the owner of Little Fatty in Mar Vista, California. The partnership has resulted in the creation of the “Little Fatty” donut, a treat that blends the culinary traditions of Hawaii and Taiwan, where taro is a staple ingredient in both cultures. This new donut features a mix of banana, coconut, caramelized sesame, and peanut flavors and will be available at all Holey Grail Donuts locations for $6 until September 25, 2024.
The “Little Fatty” donut is named after Kuo’s childhood nickname, “Xiao Pang,” which translates to “Little Fatty,” a name given to him by his family as the youngest of four brothers. This donut is a reflection of Kuo’s passion for food, emphasizing quality ingredients, authenticity, and a touch of indulgence. For those looking for a perfect pairing, Holey Grail Donuts suggests the Original Sin “Holey,” a gluten-free taro donut hole fried in coconut oil and glazed with vanilla bean and salted maple flavors. This complementary treat can be added for an extra $1.50, bringing together Taiwanese flavors, Angelino roots, and sustainable Hawaiian ingredients.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the “Little Fatty” donut will be donated to No Us Without You LA, a Los Angeles-based charitable organization that provides food relief to hospitality workers who have been severely impacted by the pandemic. The organization currently distributes over 40,000 pounds of food each month, helping to feed more than 700 families.
The “Breaking Bread” series is a monthly event that brings together celebrities, chefs, and influential individuals to create unique donuts and foster meaningful conversations. Past collaborations in the series have included partnerships with musician Donavon Frankenreiter, food personality Rick Martinez, culinary collective Ghetto Gastro, Michelin-starred chef Ludo Lefebvre, rapper Master P, and skateboarder and entrepreneur Tony Hawk.
“We have long admired David Kuo’s culinary creations and were eager to collaborate on a donut,” said Hana Dreiling, co-founder of Holey Grail Donuts. “Given that taro is a key ingredient in both Taiwanese and Hawaiian cuisines, we felt that our donuts would be the perfect medium to showcase David Kuo’s Taiwanese-inspired flavors.”
