WEST SEATTLE – Top Pot Doughnuts has made a triumphant return to West Seattle, now located at 4709 California Ave SW, the former home of Flying Apron Baking. The beloved doughnut shop had to leave its previous Alki location in 2021 due to building renovations but is now back in business.
Founded in 2002 by brothers Michael and Mark Klebeck, Top Pot Doughnuts now boasts 17 locations. The name “Top Pot” originated from a serendipitous event. Mark Klebeck recalls, “Michael and I found a sign in the Rainier Valley in the 1990s that read ‘TOP SPOT.’ We bought it for under $500. When we had it refurbished, the ‘S’ blew off on the freeway, leaving ‘TOP POT.’ It was serendipity.”
The shop’s interior is adorned with coffee pots, highlighting the classic pairing of doughnuts and coffee. This pairing has been popular since the early 20th century when doughnut shops started serving fresh doughnuts and coffee to workers. The combination became a breakfast staple in the early to mid-1800s, particularly among Dutch and German communities moving west.
Top Pot’s menu features a wide variety of doughnuts, with the maple bar being the most popular. Though the doughnuts are made in a central kitchen, there is always a great selection available. Doughnuts are sold by the dozen for $28.95, or individually, with prices ranging from $2.55 for a plain doughnut to $3.65 for a fritter. Doughnut holes, aptly named “Pot Holes,” range from $4.25 for five to $28.95 for fifty.
