Beloved bakery chain Greggs has a more upscale counterpart, Gregory’s, discovered by a British traveller in Cyprus.
When the craving for an affordable sausage roll hits, many Brits head straight to Greggs. The bakery chain is a staple for various treats, from steak bakes to doughnuts.
Greggs’ popularity has even caught international attention. A British traveller recently found a bakery called Gregory’s in Cyprus, describing it as the ‘posh’ sibling of Greggs. The tourist shared a humorous snapshot of the bakery on Reddit, joking: “When you’re travelling for the first time and try to reinvent yourself. I see you ‘Gregory’, you’re not fooling anybody!”
Gregory’s brands itself as a “coffee and Greek bakery,” according to its signage. Located in the village of Pyla in Cyprus’s Larnaca district, the bakery has received rave reviews. Tripadvisor users give it a 4.5 overall rating, with only one one-star review in 2021 from a customer missing their “famous vegan spinach pies.” Another two-star review from 2021 criticised the lack of “speciality coffees,” saying their flat white tasted “more like a cappuccino.”
Despite these, the bakery boasts 11 five-star reviews. Customers praise the “efficient service,” “friendly staff,” and the “huge selection of fabulous pastries” sold “at a fair price”—much like Greggs in the UK. One review reads: “Nice place, not just for a coffee but it also has a great selection of snacks and food to choose from. Very clean and the customer service is excellent.”
Commenters on Reddit quickly noticed the similarities between Greggs and Gregory’s. One person called Gregory’s “Greggs’ middle-class cousin.” Another commenter shared their surprise at seeing a real “Gregory” in the wild, explaining that they call any Greggs store with seating a “Gregory” in the UK, joking it makes the bakery feel like a posh restaurant.
