Westmorland and Furness Council has approved a plan for Cox Motor Group to transform the former Seat dealership site off Queen Katherine Avenue in Kendal into a Greggs bakery.
The new Greggs will feature both indoor and outdoor seating and is set to operate daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
According to a design and access statement, Cox Motor Group has owned the Kendal Motor Village site since 2005. The existing car sales area, which is no longer needed due to updated franchise requirements, will be repurposed. Previous plans included relocating the workshop to a new building to the south, which has already been completed. The outdated MOT facilities at the site also need upgrading to meet new vehicle testing regulations.
The new Greggs will be situated next to the Aldi supermarket and across from Morrisons, Halfords, and other retail units.
The planning documents highlight Greggs’ history, stating: “Founded in the 1930s, Greggs started by offering affordable fresh bakery products to working families in the North East. Today, Greggs aims to continue positively impacting lives by providing freshly prepared food accessible to all.”
Currently, Greggs operates two stores in Kendal, located in the Westmorland Shopping Centre and on Stricklandgate.
A report by planning officers noted: “The development is deemed sustainable due to its location, land-use context, the reuse of existing infrastructure, and accessibility, despite the need for a sequential test regarding town centre vitality.”
The planning application was approved on July 23.
