Mochinut Brings Japanese Mochi-Donut Fusion to College Station.

College Station, TX – Mochinut, the popular Japanese mochi and donut fusion chain, opened its doors in College Station in February 2024. Founded in California in 2020, the chain has rapidly expanded throughout the Houston area, seizing the opportunity to fill the sweet treat void in Bryan-College Station.

Though my usual beat is sports, I took the chance to sample the offerings of this intriguing new pastry shop. Upon entering, I was warmly welcomed by a staff member standing behind a display of delectable sweets. I ordered one of each available flavor, receiving a box filled with vibrant, enticing pastries. Curious about the concept, I learned from the employee that mochi is a Japanese pastry made from sweet rice dough with various flavors. Mochinut’s twist combines traditional American donuts with Japanese mochi, introducing new flavors every two weeks.

Here are my thoughts on six different Mochinut flavors:

Original Glaze (7/10)

The Original Glaze reminded me of enjoying a hot funnel cake at a fair. The donut batter was light yet very sweet, with the icing enhancing the mochi’s rich sweetness. The soft mochi “balls” that formed the donut pulled apart easily.

Peanut Butter and Jelly (6.5/10)

I expected a clash of flavors but was pleasantly surprised by the light, salty peanut butter taste that blended well with the sweet strawberry jelly. Though not a favorite, it offered a unique flavor worth trying.

Mango (9/10)

This flavor stood out as my favorite. The mango icing, made from real mango, was sweet and tart, perfectly complementing the warm dough.

White Chocolate Churro (8.5/10)

The chocolate and caramel drizzle atop this donut added a savory touch, complemented by a sprinkling of sugar. The batter had a slightly more churro-like taste, enhancing the overall flavor.

Chocolate Mocha (9/10)

Similar to the Original Glaze, this flavor featured a light chocolate icing with dark mocha sprinkles, intensifying the chocolate experience. It’s a must-try for chocolate enthusiasts.

Double Ube (7/10)

Despite its dark purple icing and slightly darker batter, this flavor was mild, resembling the Original Glaze. The batter was slightly heavier, with a subtle coconut taste.

I enjoyed each mochinut, appreciating their lighter texture compared to traditional donuts. The flavors always blended harmoniously with the mochi and donut components. My visit to the restaurant was pleasant, with friendly and helpful staff, and a cheerful ambiance.

Mochinut, located at 1411 Wellborn Road in College Station, offers a variety of flavors sure to please any sweet or donut lover. This newcomer to Aggieland is a must-visit for those seeking a delightful pastry experience.
