In Texas, where everything is famously bigger, a certain doughnut is capturing national attention. Round Rock Donuts, a nearly century-old bakery near Austin, has made headlines with its enormous “Texas Sized Donut,” earning a spot on Yelp’s 10 Outrageous Oversized Eats of 2024.
Round Rock Donuts, established 98 years ago, is the only Texas bakery on the list, thanks to its gigantic treat priced at $11.98. The colossal doughnut measures more than a foot in diameter, occupying an entire donut box. It is available in glazed, chocolate, or a half-glazed half-chocolate variety.Deanne Moehn, the bakery’s manager, shared with Yelp that the Texas Sized Donut can also be topped with maple or strawberry icing upon request.
“To create treats as ‘big as your head,’ bakers use clean buckets as massive cookie cutters in the raw dough,” Moehn explained. “They start out round but, like our smaller signature donuts, we give them an oblong shape by stretching them out.”
According to Yelp’s report, Round Rock Donuts still uses the original owner’s 1926 recipe to make their “locally famous yeast-risen yellow-orange dough.” This dough is hand-rolled, cut, fried, and iced. The giant version was introduced as a novelty by previous owners Jan and Dale Cohrs, and it quickly gained popularity.
On an average Saturday, Moehn estimates that Round Rock Donuts sells about 300 Texas Sized Donuts.
