Birley Bakery, a London-based bakery known for its French-inspired delicacies, is preparing to launch its first U.S. location on the Upper East Side at 20 East 69th Street, nestled between Madison and Fifth avenues.
Replacing the recently closed Poppi Italian café and a second-floor nail salon, Birley Bakery will occupy both floors of the building. The bakery, a passion project of London club entrepreneur Robin Birley, aims to revive the nostalgic charm of traditional French boulangerie-pâtisseries. The menu, curated over five years by master pastry chef Vincent Zanardi and his team, features a variety of breads, cakes, viennoiseries, biscuits, ice creams, and sorbets with a contemporary twist. Many of these offerings are vegan and crafted on-site using globally sourced ingredients, such as wheat flour from Burgundy, sea salt from Brittany, almonds from Valencia, and honey from Bermondsey hives. The chocolates are made from a special reserve blend of cacao beans sourced from the Philippines.
Community Board 8 recently approved Birley Bakery’s application for a beer and wine license, paving the way for patrons to enjoy alcoholic beverages alongside their coffee, tea, and soft drinks. While an exact opening date remains unspecified, legal representatives indicated it will be announced in due course.
Robin Birley, known for his hospitality ventures, also has plans to establish an exclusive supper club nearby, though details on its opening timeline are pending.
Stay tuned for updates on the anticipated openings of both Birley Bakery and the supper club as more information becomes available.
