The American Doughnut Kitchen, renowned for its iconic sugar-dusted hot jam doughnuts, has delighted Melburnians since 1950. Famously served from its vintage van at Queen Victoria Market, these treats are a staple in Melbourne’s culinary landscape.
This week, the beloved doughnut purveyor embarks on a new chapter with the opening of its first brick-and-mortar store at Prahran Market. The grand opening is set for Saturday, July 6, where customers can now enjoy their doughnuts paired with a delicious cup of coffee for the perfect market breakfast.
The new shop honors the original van’s legacy, featuring an open work station where customers can watch the entire doughnut-making process. From cutting and cooking to the royal jam filling and sugar dusting, the immersive experience promises to captivate both long-time fans and newcomers alike.
The doughnuts themselves, with their perfect balance of oily crunch and sweet raspberry plum jam, need no introduction. They offer a nostalgic taste of childhood, dusted with a generous layer of sugar.
Belinda Donaghey, managing director of American Doughnut Kitchen, expressed her excitement about the new store. “Our handmade doughnuts, made using the original recipe, have been a favorite among Melburnians for generations. The opening of our Prahran Market shop is another exciting milestone in our legacy. We look forward to serving our delicious doughnuts to new and existing Southside customers for years to come,” she said.
To celebrate the opening, the American Doughnut Kitchen is offering free doughnuts and free puppuccinos to the first 200 shoppers from 9am on Saturday, July 6.
