Sarmentine Artisan Boulanger, a well-known bakery with locations in Santa Rosa and Sebastopol, is expanding to Petaluma.
Last year, plans were announced for Sarmentine to occupy the former Ambrosia Indian Cuisine space on Petaluma Boulevard, near the intersection with Payran Street. Previously, this location housed Mike’s at the Crossroad and Johnny Garlic’s.
Recently, Petaluma residents received a promising indication that the new bakery and restaurant is nearing its opening. Several wooden signs displaying “Sarmentine Artisan Boulanger” appeared on the building’s sides and front seemingly overnight.
Founded by Alexandra and Louis Zandvliet, Sarmentine initially operated as a home-based business during the pandemic. Their first walk-in bakery opened in Santa Rosa in 2021, followed by a second location at the Barlow in Sebastopol in 2023. Named after a special baguette the couple cherished from their French upbringing, Sarmentine has gained popularity in Sonoma County for its exquisite breads and pastries.
Although an official confirmation and opening date are pending, recent developments suggest the space is nearing readiness. Inside, several pastry cases have been installed near the front entrance, and new coffee machines gleam atop freshly refurbished counters. Additionally, a grand piano, once tucked away, now occupies a prominent spot with its lid invitingly open.
With these signs of progress, a grand opening appears to be on the horizon — exciting news for local food enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the arrival of Sarmentine in Petaluma.
