Houston isn’t typically known for its bagels, but Brazos Bagels aimed to change that. After three years of serving up bagels, owner Zac Wilson has announced via social media that the venture is coming to an end—for now.
Late last week, Wilson took to Instagram to announce his departure from Houston, stating that all retail and wholesale operations in the city would cease indefinitely. Brazos Bagels had been a supplier to several local businesses, including Henderson and Kane and the recently opened Salt & Sugar.
“I will miss all of the joy that you brought to my life. It was transformative and inspiring,” Wilson wrote.
Despite ending bagel production in Houston, Wilson offered some hope to fans: Brazos Bagels will continue in a different form. From Wednesday to Sunday, Wilson will partner with Summer Lane Coffee Shop in Huntsville to offer bagels, cream cheese, and bagel sandwiches on weekends.
Additionally, Brazos Bagels will be available at two Houston-area markets. Starting July 7, the bagels will be sold at Atascosita’s Fall Creek Farmers Market on Sundays and Humble’s The Groves Marketplace on Thursdays.
The shift in Brazos Bagels’ operations comes months after a split with a cafe now known as Space City Bagels. In February, Brazos Bagels opened its first brick-and-mortar location in the Heights neighborhood at 2155 Durham Dr. However, after only six days, Wilson exited the partnership, despite the store selling out of bagels daily. The split caused quite a stir in the Heights food scene.
Following the split, Brazos Bagels resumed supplying local businesses and farmers markets until the recent announcement.
