A London bakery briefly offered Sadiq Khan-themed doughnuts on Thursday morning but swiftly pulled them from sale due to a misunderstanding over a pre-order.
Dunn’s bakery in Crouch End, known for selling doughnuts representing mayoral candidates on election days, introduced iced doughnuts filled with Tiptree raspberry jam featuring Mr. Khan’s image, priced at £1.25.
However, the doughnuts were unexpectedly removed from display by mid-morning, attributed to being mistakenly placed out due to a pre-arranged order.
Later, it was revealed the doughnuts had been set aside for Mr. Khan, who made an unplanned visit to the bakery. Deputy Mayor Joanne McCartney disclosed the visit later that afternoon.
The identity of the person who placed the special order remains undisclosed.
During his second term, Mr. Khan implemented a ban on junk food advertising across the Transport for London network.
Unlike previous elections, Dunn’s did not offer doughnuts featuring Mr. Khan’s mayoral opponents this year.
Mr. Khan had previously visited the bakery in 2016 during his first mayoral campaign to gauge the popularity of his doughnut compared to competitors like Zac Goldsmith, Caroline Pidgeon, and Sian Berry.
In his book “Breathe,” published last year, Mr. Khan recounted returning to Dunn’s in 2021 for his re-election bid against Shaun Bailey, noting the presence of “Sadiq doughnuts” as a promising sign.
On Thursday morning, Mr. Khan cast his vote in Tooting accompanied by his wife Saadiya and dog Luna.
Polling expects over two million Londoners to participate, with results anticipated at City Hall around 10 pm on Saturday.
