Laurium, Mich. – A new bakery has debuted on Hecla Street, catching the eye of Laurium visitors this summer.
Copper Country Sweets offers a diverse range of baked goods, from cookies and cupcakes to muffins and tarts, with a specialty in custom cakes for birthdays, graduations, and other celebrations. Owner Erin Turner, a graduate of Northern Michigan University, has been passionate about baking since high school. Her journey began at Skinny Pete’s Bagels and Bakery, which closed in late 2022. Encouraged by former business owners, Turner seized the opportunity to establish her own venture.
Despite a setback involving vandalism shortly before the planned opening, Turner remained resilient. “I had just started moving my equipment into the building when I received news about a brick thrown through the window,” she recounted. “Though unsettling, the incident brought unexpected community support and awareness to our business.”
Following a successful grand opening on June 8, Copper Country Sweets has garnered enthusiastic feedback from local residents eager for fresh bakery options. Turner expressed delight at the positive reception, noting an influx of customers seeking bespoke cakes, a departure from store-bought alternatives.
The bakery operates from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Additionally, Copper Country Sweets participates in the From the Ground Farmers Market Collective at Agassiz Park in Calumet, open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For updates and a detailed schedule, visit their Facebook page.
