Sydney’s dining scene has taken another blow with the closure of Marrickville’s popular sweet spot, Donut Papi, set for the end of July. Owner Kenneth Rodrigueza expressed his emotional farewell, acknowledging the challenges faced by small businesses in Australia.
“It’s a tough game out there. It’s not for the faint-hearted. I am very proud of Donut Papi for making it to nine years,” Rodrigueza stated in his announcement.
The closure reflects broader economic challenges, as many Australians tighten their spending amidst rising living costs. This trend has led to closures across cafes, restaurants, and small businesses, despite their longstanding community presence.
Donut Papi gained acclaim for its creatively decorated and uniquely flavored donuts, drawing a devoted following over the years. Fans, including those willing to travel long distances, expressed sadness over the impending closure on social media.
Originally starting as a market stall nine years ago in Redfern, Donut Papi offered a range of flavors from classic caramel apple fritter to inventive options like Thai milk tea and ube polvoron. Customers praised not only the toppings but also the quality of the donuts themselves.
Despite the closure, loyal customers reminisced about their favorite treats and expressed hope for a future return. The closure of Donut Papi adds to recent closures in Sydney’s dining scene, including notable establishments like Lucky Kwong and Tetsuya’s.
Donut enthusiasts can visit Donut Papi on Marrickville Road until the end of July, from Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm, or until sold out.
