A new bakery, Monika’s Bakery Boutique, has recently opened its doors in the Gardens of Ringling Park neighborhood, situated just east of downtown Sarasota along Ringling Boulevard. Named after its owners, Monika Mieszalska and her husband Paul Novak, the bakery brings a touch of European charm to the Sarasota culinary scene. Originally from Poland, both Monika and Paul relocated to Sarasota from New Jersey two years ago.
Paul Novak shared their journey to Sarasota, highlighting their desire to escape New Jersey’s harsh weather and embrace Florida’s sunny climate. Their love for Sarasota was immediate upon visiting, prompting them to establish their bakery here.
With extensive backgrounds in the food industry, the decision to open a bakery was a natural one for Monika and Paul. Paul previously worked in his family’s Polish food manufacturing business, while Monika, with over three decades of baking experience and restaurant ownership in Europe, brings a deep passion for baking to their new venture.
At Monika’s Bakery, variety is key. The dessert case boasts American-style cheesecakes featuring flavors like lemon curd, mango, apricot, Amaretto, and mixed berry, alongside favorites such as tiramisu and carrot cake. European influences are evident in specialties like the gluten-free poppyseed “poppyseed lady” dessert, layered with sweet cherry jam and mascarpone.
Reflecting European tastes, Monika adjusts recipes to ensure desserts are less sweet than typical American offerings. Even American recipes are adapted to reduce sugar content, creating a unique blend of flavors that cater to diverse palates.
Beyond desserts, Monika’s Bakery offers a selection of European candies and treats, complemented by freshly brewed Italian coffee made to order. According to Paul, their commitment to quality extends to coffee, sourced to meet the standards set by European café culture.
As patrons explore the bakery, Monika can often be found in the kitchen, baking Polish pastries like drozdozøwka z serem, a sweet cheese Danish with a pretzel-like dough, perfect alongside their acclaimed coffee.
