Balmoral Bakery, a beloved heritage bakery in Singapore, might permanently close next year. Operating since 1965, it has become a cherished institution among locals.
The bakery has a storied history, starting as a street stall by a group of Hainanese brothers, catering to British soldiers with traditional Eurasian bakes. In 1985, it moved to its current location in Clementi. Today, it is run by 78-year-old Mr. Lim Ming Noong, a second-generation owner and head baker.
In a recent interview with CNA on June 16, Mr. Lim revealed the bakery might close within a year due to his health and the physical demands of the job. He mentioned retirement as a consideration for the closure.
However, there is a glimmer of hope. Mr. Lim is open to finding a successor, even outside his family, though he is prepared to close the bakery without regret if necessary.
Balmoral Bakery’s future remains uncertain. Now might be the perfect time for a visit to enjoy its nostalgic offerings.
The bakery offers a wide variety of baked goods, including creamed cakes, tarts, puffs, and buns. Highlights include Mini Cupcakes (S$0.60) with colorful icing, and Pandan Chiffon Cake (S$1.60).
Balmoral Bakery is renowned for its puffs, such as Chicken Pie (S$1.80), Beef Curry Puff (S$1.60), Chicken Samosa (S$1.60), and Sausage Rolls (S$1.60). Another specialty is the Sugee Cake (S$7), an almond-vanilla cake with brandy, a rare Eurasian delicacy in Singapore.
The Napoleon (S$1.60), a treat with layers of puff pastry and vanilla custard topped with chocolate, is also highly recommended.
With the bakery’s future in doubt, now is an ideal time to visit Balmoral Bakery for a taste of its traditional delights.
