Granbury’s beloved Acton Donuts is back in business after a challenging year. The shop, located at 3101 Fall Creek Highway, reopened following a car crash in December 2023 that severely damaged the building.
Owned by Okju and Sehwan Chun since 1998, Acton Donuts has been a community favorite for over 20 years. The Chuns, originally from Korea, bought the shop shortly after moving to the U.S. and have since been dedicated to serving their customers daily from 5 a.m. to noon.
“Our day starts early,” said Sehwan Chun. “I wake up around midnight to make the donuts, and Okju arrives around 4 a.m. to open the shop.” The shop is known for its classic glazed and chocolate donuts, as well as savory options like croissant sandwiches and sausage rolls.
On December 7, 2023, a typical day turned tragic. “It was around 9 a.m. I was serving a customer in the drive-thru, and Sehwan was inside preparing dough. Suddenly, we heard a loud crash and debris flew everywhere,” recalled Okju Chun. A truck, traveling at about 80 mph, had struck a car in the drive-thru before crashing into the building, narrowly missing Sehwan Chun and destroying the back area where equipment and ingredients were stored.
This crash was just one of several major challenges the Chuns faced. Earlier, in March 2023, an electrical fire forced them to close for three months. The fire caused minor exterior damage, but smoke contamination led to the loss of most of their inventory.
Despite these setbacks, the Chuns remained resilient, supported by their loyal customers. “The language barrier has been our biggest challenge,” said Okju Chun. “We wish we could interact more fluently with our customers, but we are grateful for their support.”
As they reopen in early June, the Chuns look forward to welcoming back their community. “We are so thankful for our longtime and new customers. They tell us how great our donuts taste, which reassures us we are doing well. We love seeing our customers happy,” said Okju Chun.
The reopening of Acton Donuts marks a hopeful new chapter for the Chuns, filled with gratitude for the community that has supported them through tough times.
