OLEAN — The first Friday in June marks National Donut Day, America’s sweetest holiday. This year, it falls on June 7. The Salvation Army, which inspired the creation of this holiday, continues to be central to its celebration.
In 1917, The Salvation Army sent volunteers to France during World War I to support soldiers on the front lines. These volunteers, known as “Donut Lassies,” fried and served donuts to thousands of soldiers. These treats not only provided a taste of home but also boosted morale and comforted homesick troops.
The first National Donut Day was celebrated in 1938 in Chicago. It was organized by The Salvation Army as a fundraiser during the Great Depression and to honor the Donut Lassies for their contributions during the war.
Over 80 years later, The Salvation Army still plays a vital role in helping those in need. In Olean, the organization supports hundreds of families annually through its food pantry, clothing center, and financial assistance programs.
“National Donut Day is special for us, reminding us of the daily work we do for our community,” said Captain Elisha Moretz. “We are proud to honor The Salvation Army’s history and the legacy of the Donut Lassies.”
This year, Ried’s Food Barn is partnering with The Salvation Army. On June 7, for every dozen donuts purchased from their bakery, $1 will be donated to support National Donut Day. The Salvation Army of Olean expressed gratitude to Ried’s Food Barn for their support.
