Dutch Girl Donuts, a beloved name among Detroiters for generations, has reopened its doors on Woodward Avenue, marking a significant moment for locals who have missed its delicious treats and rich history.
During a recent soft opening, the shop welcomed eager customers with free donuts, evoking nostalgia and excitement. One patron, I’Sha Schultz-Spradla, expressed her enthusiasm, reminiscing about her previous visits and now introducing her son to the delights of Dutch Girl Donuts. Another customer, Rainer Borromeo, shared how he and his wife seized the opportunity to attend the soft opening upon hearing about it that morning.
Established in 1947 by the Timmer family, Dutch Girl Donuts has remained a cherished institution for over 75 years. Following the passing of the owner in September 2021, the shop unfortunately had to close its doors. However, Paddy Lynch, a funeral director inspired by the shop’s legacy, took up the mantle to revive the business.
Lynch emphasized the significance of Dutch Girl Donuts as a longstanding family-operated establishment, noting that each treat is crafted with care and intentionality. He made a heartfelt decision to hire John, the owner’s son, to ensure the continuation of the beloved donut-making tradition.
Reflecting on the emotional significance of the reopening, Lynch recalled his own childhood memories of visiting the shop, underscoring its deep-rooted connection to the community. The official reopening is scheduled for the weekend of Mother’s Day, a fitting tribute to the shop’s legacy of family and tradition.
As Dutch Girl Donuts embarks on this new chapter, Lynch believes that John’s parents and grandmother, Cecilia, the original Dutch Girl, would be proud of the revival. The shop’s new operating hours, Tuesday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., ensure that locals can continue to enjoy their favorite treats at their convenience.
