After 48 years of serving the community, Donut Circus, a beloved landmark in Fort Pierce, has officially closed its doors. The shop ceased operations on Wednesday afternoon, marking the end of an era for locals and visitors alike.
Originally opened in 1976, Donut Circus became a cherished establishment in the area, known for its delectable treats and welcoming atmosphere. For the past 12 years, Ernie and Sophie Sao have been the heart and soul of the shop, dedicating themselves to providing quality service and memorable experiences for their patrons.
Reflecting on their time at Donut Circus, Ernie and Sophie expressed deep gratitude for the relationships they’ve built with their customers over the years. Jim Waska, a longtime patron, fondly recalled the bustling atmosphere of the shop, reminiscing about its days of being open 24/7.
“Six or seven years ago, this place was open 24/7,” Waska recalled. “You could come here at 3 o’clock in the morning and not find a seat to sit.”
For Ernie and Sophie, the decision to retire was a bittersweet one, driven by the need to prioritize family responsibilities. Ernie shared that his wife, Sophie, has been particularly emotional about the closure, as they bid farewell to customers who have become like family to them.
“My wife, she keeps crying,” Ernie revealed. “She has emotion with missing her customers. They’re just like a family.”
Despite the sadness surrounding the closure, Ernie expressed optimism for the future and gratitude for the support they’ve received from the community throughout their tenure.
As the doors of Donut Circus close for the last time, the legacy of this beloved establishment will live on in the hearts and memories of those who were fortunate enough to experience its warmth and hospitality.
