After nearly a year serving the community, Duck Donuts is bidding adieu to the Tallahassee market.
In a post made early Thursday on the shop’s Facebook page, which boasts a following of 2,500, the announcement was made that the establishment will permanently close its doors after April 21.
“Tallahassee, you have been a joy to serve,” the post conveyed, while also urging patrons to drop by to collect their final dozen and bid farewell to the staff.
The news prompted swift reactions from users, many expressing disbelief with comments such as “what the heck!” dominating the response. One user expressed gratitude, stating, “Oh no. I’m so sorry, but thank you for trying. Not only are Duck Donuts the best in town, the owners and staff are the nicest people. We’ll be in before you close.”
Another commenter reflected on the importance of supporting local businesses, noting, “one must remember it’s not enough to just ‘want’ more options in town, but you must ‘support’ them when they get here.”
Is Tallahassee not a destination for artisanal doughnuts? The closure of Shipley Do-Nuts‘ West Tennessee Street location a year ago after a brief stint, along with the closure of SōDOUGH Baking Co. in Midtown in 2022, raises this question. Meanwhile, Dunkin’ continues to expand its presence in the city, with a current count of a dozen stores, and Tallahassee’s own Donut Kingdom, established in 2009, has expanded to three locations within the capital.
Occupying a 1,500-square-foot space in Capital Plaza, local Duck Donut franchisees Timothy and Renee McGrew offered made-to-order doughnuts, breakfast sandwiches, sundaes, milkshakes, and coffee.
Duck Donuts boasts 130 locations nationally and internationally, with the nearest outlet to the capital located in Jacksonville.
