After more than 60 years, iconic Hawaiian bakery closes its doors

WAILUKU, MAUI – A beloved institution in Wailuku, Home Maid Bakery, renowned for its delectable crispy manju, Chantilly cake, and malasadas, has announced its decision to cease operations by the end of March. The closure comes as a result of both financial challenges and the recent passing of the bakery’s patriarch, marking the end of an era for this longstanding family business.

In a heartfelt message shared on its official Facebook page, Home Maid Bakery expressed profound sorrow over the closure, stating, “It is with deep sadness that, after 60 years in business, we have to announce that Home Maid Bakery will permanently close its doors at the end of the month.” The statement also extended gratitude to the loyal patrons who have steadfastly supported the bakery throughout its storied history.

The bakery’s financial woes were compounded by the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Maui fires, which dealt a significant blow to its operations. According to reports from KITV-TV, the bakery suffered substantial losses in wholesale accounts following the Lahaina fire, while a subsequent decline in tourism further exacerbated its challenges.

Home Maid Bakery was founded in 1960 by Joseph and Monica Kozuki, who established a legacy of excellence in baking. In the 1980s, their son Jeremy Kozuki assumed leadership and played a pivotal role in expanding the bakery’s offerings and reach.

Tragically, Jeremy Kozuki passed away recently, leaving a profound void within the family and the business. Kimberly Molina, one of Kozuki’s three children, reflected on the challenges the family faced in the wake of his passing, telling Maui Now, “It’s hard for us to manage the operations because my dad was the key to the business. He came in every day to make sure operations ran smoothly.” With all three children maintaining full-time employment, the absence of their father posed insurmountable obstacles to continuing operations.

As the family grapples with this difficult decision, the question remains unanswered as to whether Home Maid Bakery will be sold to a new owner who may continue its legacy. Molina remarked to Maui Now, “We’ll see what happens in the future,” underscoring the uncertainty surrounding the bakery’s fate.

The closure of Home Maid Bakery marks the end of an era for Maui residents and visitors alike, who have cherished its delicious treats and warm hospitality for six decades. As the community bids farewell to this cherished establishment, its legacy of culinary excellence and familial dedication will endure in the hearts and memories of all who were fortunate enough to experience it.
