At 6 a.m., while most are still asleep, Karla Marie LaJeunesse is already knee-deep in flour, embarking on her daily ritual of crafting delectable donuts. As the owner of Simply Sinful Donuts in Downtown Albuquerque, LaJeunesse orchestrates a symphony of flavors before the sun graces the horizon.
“I make 16 flavors every day,” she says. “And they’re not just any donuts; they’re sold by the box, available in four, eight, or 16 donut assortments.”
With a penchant for culinary artistry that dates back to her childhood, LaJeunesse’s journey into the world of food began at the tender age of five. Growing up in the South Valley, she found herself surrounded by the aromas of her grandparents’ kitchen, where hearty meals were prepared for their large family of 13.
“My grandpa taught me how to make French toast,” she reminisces. “And later, I would tune in to watch Julia Child on TV, mesmerized by the magic of cooking.”
As she transitioned from band practice to the kitchen, LaJeunesse’s passion for culinary exploration only deepened. Despite initially hesitating to pursue a culinary education, her dedication led her to Street Food Institute in 2021, where she honed her skills and laid the foundation for Simply Sinful Donuts.
The inspiration for her donut empire came during her stint as the renowned Donut Kween on Yelp in 2014. After traveling the country, sampling donuts, and mastering the art of frying dough, LaJeunesse’s dream finally materialized with the opening of Simply Sinful Donuts in 2021.
Located at 400 Gold Ave. SW in Downtown Albuquerque, the cozy shop offers a variety of flavors that change regularly, with classics like Envy, Gluttony, and Lust gracing the menu alongside rotating specials.
“I like donuts that are creative and colorful,” LaJeunesse explains. “I change my menu every two or three weeks, and those additional nine flavors can be anything I want.”
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, LaJeunesse remains resilient, drawing strength from her daughter, who joins her in the kitchen each morning before heading to work at Hotel Andaluz.
“It’s been really great to work with her,” LaJeunesse shares. “We both share a love, and she’s teaching me a lot.”
As Simply Sinful Donuts continues to delight customers with its inventive treats, LaJeunesse remains committed to supporting the local community and spreading joy, one donut at a time.
