For the past few years, Mister Donut has been launching a special series of donuts called “Sakura Mochi” to celebrate the arrival of cherry blossom season in Japan. Known for their “mochitto” (chewy) texture, these donuts are some of the prettiest donuts in Japan. This year, they’ve taken the chewiness a step further, bringing it closer to the texture of sakura mochi, a pink rice cake wrapped in pickled cherry blossom leaves.
The new donuts retain the texture of the aforementioned sweet treat in donut form, with four different types to choose from.
The first item is the “Sakura Mochi Kurobe Kinako” (194 yen [US$1.30] to take out; 198 yen to eat in). Kinako is roasted soybean flour, but this donut uses a special variety called “kurosu kinako,” which is coarser and less fine than the regular variety. This not only adds a chewy texture, but also brings out the delicious nutty roasted flavor that pairs perfectly with the sakura-flavored donut.
Next up is the “Sakura Rice Wine Salt Red Bean” (205 yen for takeout, 209 yen for dine-in). This beautiful sakura donut is filled with salty red bean paste and topped with white chocolate and sakura-flavored chocolate chips. The salty taste brings out the delicious taste of sakura mochi.
Sakura Rice Cake Strawberry Daifuku Flavor (205 yen for takeout, 209 yen for dine-in). This dessert is made with a light sakura dough, with strawberry puree mixed into the red bean paste, and topped with strawberry chocolate and icing. This combination of ingredients is said to be reminiscent of strawberry daifuku (a sweet rice cake with strawberry and red bean paste filling) in both taste and appearance.
Finally, Sakura Rice Wine Strawberry Custard (205 yen for takeout, 209 yen for dine-in). This beautiful sakura donut has a layer of cream filling inside, a layer of strawberry red bean paste filling, and is covered with strawberry chocolate on the outside, and topped with sakura chocolate chips.
Mister Donut says the range will allow you to “see, eat and feel spring”, and we can’t wait to try all of the products when they’re available for a limited time starting March 5.
