After more than 60 years in business, Portland’s Tony’s Donut Shop is now for sale. The news hit the local community hard, with many saying they were sad to see the family-owned business close.
“A lot of people come in and cry,” said Michelle Goddard, owner and granddaughter of founder Tony Fournier. “I get it.”
Tony’s Donuts has been a local staple since 1965, serving up more than 100 dozen donuts a day, with double that on holidays. The classic original donut remains a hit, along with staples like the Bismarck donut and coffee cake. However, rising costs and the pressure of changing times, especially in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, led Michelle and her family to make the difficult decision to sell the donuts.
“Every six months, everything goes up,” Michelle said. “In the city of Portland, the minimum wage is a little bit higher.”
Tony’s has been owned by the Fournier family since its founding in 1965. Michelle’s father, Rick, took over Tony’s position, and in 2020, when her father could no longer run the business due to his battle with multiple sclerosis, Michelle took over management.
Michelle said the donuts will continue to be served until a buyer is found. The staff is preparing for a busy Mother’s Day weekend. Michelle hopes to eventually find a buyer who is willing to continue selling donuts and keep the staff there.
“I’m hoping someone will keep it as a donut shop,” she said. “I’m still hoping someone will keep us all here.”
