The “I’m donut” donut shop, run by Fukuoka bakery Peace Put, sells donuts stuffed with teriyaki chicken and cream mixed with matcha powder or sake. It will also sell donuts tailored to New York tastes.
A preview event was held on Friday before the opening of the Times Square store. Its donuts are priced between $4 and $13 (about 570 to 1,850 yen).
A product made with dough kneaded with pumpkin puree has a light and soft texture and has become a hot topic on social media.
In Japan, Peace Put operates donut shops in Fukuoka and Tokyo.
The New York store will also sell vegan donuts made with almond milk.
“We looked at donut shops in the United States to study the needs there,” said company president Ryota Hirako, who hopes to use the New York store as a stepping stone for further overseas expansion.
