When Huber and Carla Pineda decided to leave Sacramento and move to Kansas, they had two goals in mind: to open their own doughnut shop and to find a location with a lower cost of living than California. After choosing Wichita, almost by chance, the couple realized the city was the perfect fit — there was no other business in town offering the type of menu they envisioned.
Now, the couple is preparing to open Mena’s Donut House at 343 S. Greenwich, the former location of the east-side Mochinut, which closed in November. They are aiming for an opening date of April 1.
The shop is named after their 2-year-old daughter, Ximena, who affectionately calls herself “Mena.” In addition to their signature doughnuts, the menu will feature a variety of sweet and savory crepes, scratch-made cinnamon rolls, waffles, pancakes, bagels, topped toasts, and breakfast and lunch sandwiches. The doughnuts will include both raised and cake-style options, and the shop will offer drip coffee, hot chocolate, and cappuccinos. A unique item on the menu will be pancake tacos, a twist on the classic breakfast taco, replacing tortillas with pancakes.
