Twin Donuts, a beloved diner at 501 Cambridge Street in Allston, is closing its doors after 70 years in business. The diner’s last day of service will be Sunday, March 23, with the shop officially closing on March 24.
A message from the owners, circulating online, expresses gratitude to the community: “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve our Allston/Brighton community for the past 25 years, and your business has been truly appreciated by our family all these years.” An employee confirmed the news, attributing the closure to slowing business.
Since opening in 1955, Twin Donuts has been a local staple. The most recent owners, Chiang Sou Pang and her late husband, Leang Sim Taing, purchased the diner in 2001. Both originally from Cambodia, they escaped the Khmer Rouge regime and started anew in the U.S. By 2004, the couple had expanded their business, acquiring two other local diners, Café Mirror and Brighton Cafe, which they operated for the next two decades.
Twin Donuts became a beacon in Allston, attracting college students, late-night shift workers, and breakfast lovers with its affordable and hearty offerings, including pancakes, French toast, corned beef hash, and the diner’s signature puffy, glazed doughnuts. Despite the recent rise in food costs, Twin Donuts remained a symbol of comfort and tradition.
