In Croatia, donut consumption soars before Carnival and the start of Lent, with estimates suggesting that Croatians consume at least 30 million donuts in the two weeks leading up to Lent. This translates to an average of 2 million donuts being consumed every day during this period. It’s a tradition that sees nearly 8 donuts eaten per person across the country, highlighting the popularity of this sweet treat during the pre-Lenten festivities.
Bakeries and stores like Mlinar in Koprivnica have experienced a surge in demand, with some of the pricier varieties—such as chocolate and pistachio-filled donuts—often disappearing quickly from shelves. Despite their higher price tags, these donuts remain in high demand, with chocolate donuts priced at 1.25 euros and pistachio donuts at 2 euros, reflecting the indulgent nature of the season. Fruit-filled donuts at Mlinar cost 0.65 euros, and while many donuts are sold frozen and then boiled or thawed for convenience, freshly baked varieties from local bakeries are still the top choice for many.
