Capitol Hill’s 24-Hour Voodoo Doughnuts to Finally Open Next Week

by Celia

Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood will soon be home to a 24-hour doughnut destination. Voodoo Doughnuts, the popular Portland-based chain, has officially announced its grand opening date for next week.

Word had already spread among job seekers that the shop was set to open on December 10. The company confirmed the news on Tuesday afternoon, inviting customers to join the celebration at 8 AM. Voodoo will mark the occasion by donating 20% of the day’s sales to the nonprofit FareStart. The first 50 customers will also receive an exclusive gift.

Although the grand opening is scheduled for Tuesday, a soft opening is expected over the weekend for local residents and a few thousand social media followers.

Voodoo Doughnuts will operate around the clock, making it a go-to spot for Seattle’s doughnut lovers. The new store has been highly anticipated, and its 24/7 hours are likely to keep the lines long well into the night.

The opening has been delayed several times. Originally planned for spring, the debut was pushed back. CHS first reported on the arrival of Seattle’s first Voodoo Doughnuts in October 2023, after construction permits revealed plans for the shop in the Booker Building. The space, at Pine and Minor streets, was previously home to Lan Hand-Pulled Noodles and Pho 4 U. Both restaurants left to make way for the doughnut shop in an “amicable” shift.

The neighborhood has undergone significant changes. This year, CHS reported that Machiavelli, a local favorite, had closed as part of a property turnover. San Francisco-based Prado Group purchased the Booker Building for $5 million in 2022. New businesses, including Cheese Room and The Plant Store, have since opened in the building.

Voodoo Doughnuts will add to Capitol Hill’s vibrant doughnut scene. Top Pot, Seattle’s iconic doughnut brand, has a location nearby and celebrated 20 years at its Summit café in 2022. Mighty-O, a vegan doughnut shop, opened on Capitol Hill in 2015, though it has faced challenges due to complaints from condo residents about the shop’s ovens. Donut Joy, another vegan option, debuted in 2022 on E Pike. For filled doughnuts, General Porpoise, which opened on E Union in 2015, has become a local favorite. Raised Doughnuts, known for its craft doughnuts, moved into a new space at 23rd and Union in 2022. Smaller shops like George’s Delicatessen and Half and Half Doughnut Co. also contribute to the area’s doughnut culture.

Voodoo Doughnuts has grown over the past 20 years, with locations in nine states, including four in Oregon. In response to its expansion, the company has worked to organize its workforce, with Doughnut Workers United representing employees at the Portland store.

Construction at the Capitol Hill location is nearly complete, with the signature “Voodoo pink” paint visible for months. Delays were caused by additional construction work, including the installation of a ramp and a demising wall.

Next week, the wait will be over, and Seattle’s doughnut lovers will finally get their round-the-clock fix.
