A Fairfax City donut shop has reopened today (Thursday) after being closed for three days due to tax issues. Duck Donuts, located at 10694 Fairfax Blvd, was shut down on Monday, November 18, by the Virginia Department of Taxation, which had placed multiple liens on the business for unpaid taxes.
Keith Kirkland, the franchise owner, confirmed the closure, explaining, “We had an issue, we fixed it, and we moved on.” He declined to provide further details about the tax matter.
A Reddit user shared a post on Wednesday showing a notice on the shop’s door. The notice claimed that Kirkland’s company, CuriousParrot, owed approximately $230,000 in unpaid Virginia taxes. It listed five tax liens against the business, including two filed in Fairfax County Circuit Court, one in Fairfax City, and two in Arlington County.
Under Virginia law, liens can be placed on a business if taxes are not paid within 30 days of the due date.
When asked whether Duck Donuts or CuriousParrot LLC still owed taxes, Kirkland responded, “We’re open, so no, I don’t owe anything.”
The Virginia Department of Taxation did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication.
Kirkland has owned the Fairfax City and Herndon locations of Duck Donuts, a North Carolina-based chain, since April 2019. The Fairfax City store opened in 2015.
In addition to its popular made-to-order donuts, Duck Donuts offers a variety of breakfast sandwiches, ice cream, coffee, and other drinks. The store allows customers to customize donuts with eight different icings, 12 toppings, including bacon, and 13 different drizzles.
Duck Donuts has other locations in Fairfax County, including Centreville and Springfield. A spokesperson confirmed earlier this year that a new store was planned for Vienna, though further updates have not been provided.
