Rochester, Minnesota, is facing bittersweet news with the upcoming closure of a beloved Dunkin’ Donuts location. For many, including myself, this place holds special memories. I’ll never forget arriving late to a meeting, grabbing a coffee, and meeting my now-boss for the first time.
Almost seven years ago, I received a text from a man named Dunken, who wanted to chat. Many in Rochester know him from the morning show on 106.9 KROC. He suggested meeting at Dunkin’ Donuts on 1st Avenue. I found the coincidence amusing—Dunken at Dunkin—but kept my laughter to myself.
Every month, about 1.5 million people in the U.S. lose their jobs, and I was part of that statistic in 2017. The experience is overwhelming, filled with complicated paperwork and the exhausting search for new employment. The moment you leave your job for the last time can feel incredibly defeating.
That day, when I met Dunken at Dunkin’, marked a turning point for me. During our conversation, he inquired about my availability, and I told him I was free after today—I was on my way to collect my personal items, officially ending my previous job.
Every visit to this Dunkin’ reminds me of that life-changing day. Sadly, after October 31st, all that will remain are memories, as this Dunkin’ location will close its doors for good.
