Voodoo Doughnuts Closes Cypress Location, Leaving Three Remaining Shops in Houston Area.
Voodoo Doughnuts, a popular doughnut chain from Oregon, has closed its Cypress location, marking its first closure in the Houston area. According to Community Impact, the store shut its doors in October, leaving three other locations in and around the Loop.
The news of the Cypress closure spread quickly on social media. A local group, Houston Historic Retail, shared a photo last Wednesday showing the store’s sign being taken down at 9320 Barker Cypress Rd. Many residents were surprised by the sudden closure, as there was no prior announcement or signage indicating the shop would close.
“We visited just a day or two before they closed and had no idea until we saw posts on Facebook. There were no signs or banners saying ‘closing’ — they just quietly disappeared,” one customer commented.
Another resident remarked, “Too ‘Weird’ for Cypress. Does great on 6th Street in Austin.”
Despite the closure in Cypress, Voodoo Doughnut‘s Buffalo Heights location is planning special offerings for Valentine’s Day weekend, from Friday, February 14, to Sunday, February 16.
Founded in Portland in May 2003, Voodoo Doughnuts gained fame for its late-night hours, catering to the city’s nightlife. The unique hours attracted customers looking for a sweet treat after concerts or clubbing. The chain is also known for its outrageous doughnut creations, including one that was once glazed with NyQuil and another topped with Pepto-Bismol and crushed Tums—both of which were discontinued after health officials intervened.
Voodoo Doughnuts made its debut in Houston in 2020, opening its first location at 3715 Washington Ave. A second shop followed in Montrose at 1214 Westheimer Rd. The Cypress store opened in May 2022, becoming the company’s thirteenth location nationwide.
