Krispy Kreme Turns Mishap into Marketing Opportunity for Police Appreciation.
Last week, an early morning accident involving Krispy Kreme doughnuts in Allen Park has sparked a unique marketing opportunity for the doughnut company. This incident, along with a humorous social media post, has allowed Krispy Kreme to thank local police officers for their efforts.
“We wanted to express our gratitude,” said Jack Farmer, a spokesperson for Krispy Kreme, in an interview with the Free Press. He noted that the company was relieved the incident occurred in the early morning rather than during the busy afternoon rush hour.
The mishap involved an unsecured door latch on a delivery truck, which caused several boxes and trays of doughnuts to spill onto the road around 1 a.m. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, the sight of officers picking up doughnuts from the street was too good to pass up for social media.
The Allen Park Police Department shared a photo of the scene on Facebook, captioning it with humor: “The road was cleared but most of the Krispy Kreme doughnuts were lost,” and added, “our officers are still grieving but will press on.”
This incident highlights a long-standing stereotype about police and doughnuts. The tradition dates back decades when bakeries would offer free treats to officers, who provided a sense of safety during their nighttime shifts.
In response to the police department’s post, Krispy Kreme delivered dozens of fresh doughnuts to the station as a gesture of thanks for the officers’ cleanup efforts. The company also reached out to the Free Press to announce its plans.
Officer Patrick Moore of the Allen Park Police Department stated that no one took offense to the situation. He emphasized that the officers appreciated the treats, noting that even those who typically groan at doughnut jokes quickly warm up to a free doughnut.
