CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Pepperbox Doughnuts, a beloved donut shop in Charlotte’s South End, will close its doors after October 31 due to declining sales over the past two years. The announcement was made on social media on October 15.
The shop has served the community for nearly eight years, including five years at its current location in the Design Center of the Carolinas on Camden Road. In its post, Pepperbox expressed gratitude for the support it has received, stating, “We can’t begin to express how much this time has meant to all of us. We’ve learned so much, met so many great people, and had the joy of watching people love and support our small business along the way.”
Previously, Pepperbox operated another location in Charlotte’s NoDa neighborhood but closed that shop a few months ago. The South End location was the first brick-and-mortar store for Pepperbox, which opened in 2019.
Known for its vegan-friendly donuts, coffee drinks, and breakfast sandwiches, Pepperbox will maintain its regular hours until closing: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday to Thursday and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Friday to Sunday. However, the shop may close earlier if items sell out.
In its farewell message, Pepperbox invited customers to visit one last time for a donut or breakfast sandwich before the closure. Many patrons expressed their disappointment on social media and suggested alternative ways to keep the brand alive, such as pop-up shops or food trucks.
The closure reflects broader challenges facing small businesses in the area, particularly those offering vegan options. Other local vegan establishments have also shut down recently, raising concerns among supporters about the future of vegan dining in Charlotte.
