New Mochinut Location Opens Near University of Colorado Springs.
The rise of strip malls and suburban areas in Colorado Springs has made dining out a popular pastime for college students. As eager reporters and hungry students, we are always looking for new places to eat.
Recently, Mochinut, a well-known mochi donut shop, opened a new location in the University Village Colorado shopping center. This spot is just a short drive or walk from campus. We decided to visit to try some “mochinuts” and see if the excitement around the place was justified.
We ordered a half dozen mochinuts for $18, a crispy ramen rice hotdog for $5.25, and matcha milk tea with brown sugar boba for $6.
Mochinut Reviews
Taro Mochinut
Zee: I rate the Taro mochinut four out of five stars. It was chewier than I expected, which I liked. I enjoy taro, but I found this one a bit too sweet. Despite that, I would definitely order it again.
Livi: I give it two out of five stars. When I first tasted it, I thought it was the best, but the others changed my mind. The taro flavor was very subtle and easily overlooked, but it was generally a nice donut.
Churro Mochinut
Zee: This was my favorite flavor, earning five out of five stars. The cinnamon and sugar mix was perfect, and it wasn’t as messy as a traditional churro. I would definitely pick this one first.
Livi: I have been craving churros, so I rate this one four out of five stars. It had everything you want: not too sweet, a good cinnamon flavor, and it was easy to bite into. It reminded me more of a cinnamon toast crunch donut.
Dragon Fruit Mochinut
Zee: I gave the dragon fruit mochinut two out of five stars because it was very sweet. The flavor was okay, but it was my least favorite of the ones I tried.
Livi: This was my favorite, and I rate it five out of five stars. Strawberry donuts are my favorite, and this one tasted very similar. Even though it was supposed to be dragon fruit, the flavor wasn’t exact, but I still enjoyed the sweet fruity taste.
Blueberry Mochinut
Zee: I was surprised by how much I liked the blueberry mochinut. I give it five out of five stars because it tasted like real blueberries and had the right amount of sweetness.
Livi: Like Zee said, the blueberry mochinut was excellent. I give it four out of five stars for its real blueberry flavor, but I wish there was more glaze on it.
Funnel Cake Mochinut
Zee: I rate the funnel cake mochinut three out of five stars. It was good but tasted a bit plain compared to the other flavors.
Livi: The funnel cake was decent, but I give it two out of five stars. It had powdered sugar and a fake strawberry syrup that I didn’t like. I probably wouldn’t order it again.
White Chocolate Raspberry Mochinut
Zee: This mochinut was tasty but a bit too sweet for me, so I give it three out of five stars. The chocolate texture was different from the other mochinuts but still enjoyable.
Livi: I have to give this one star. The white chocolate didn’t taste good with the mochi dough, and the chocolate coating was too thick. It was overly sweet, and the texture was odd.
Boba
Zee: I ordered the matcha boba, and it didn’t meet my expectations. I give it two out of five stars. The boba was perfect, but the matcha flavor was bland. The drink came in a cute can that made it easy to mix. Next time, I would choose a fruit tea with boba instead of a milk tea.
Livi: When the boba arrived, we loved the cute cup, but I also give it two out of five stars. The boba was cooked well but slightly overdone. It was too sweet, making it hard to taste the tea, so I ended up throwing it away.
Crispy Ramen Rice Dog
Zee: I’ve never liked corn dogs, but this one was delicious. I rate it 4.5 out of five stars. It didn’t have the usual issue of breading clinging to the hotdog and leaving it undercooked. The crispy ramen and rice instead of regular breading won me over.
Livi: This was a first for me, and I rate it three out of five stars. It was tasty, especially with sweet chili sauce. However, I would recommend just getting the original rice hotdog for $3.99 instead of the ramen version. The ramen didn’t add much, and it was a bit messy.
Overall Review
Zee: I give Mochinut four out of five stars. The food was delicious, unique, and reasonably priced. The atmosphere was adorable, with modern floral features. It was well-lit, clean, and cozy inside, with plenty of seating. I would definitely return, though not on a regular basis.
Livi: I rate Mochinut three out of five stars overall. It’s a clean restaurant with friendly staff. The mochi dough makes the donuts chewier and tasty. Their shape makes them easy to share. However, I suggest skipping the drinks. The quality of the food and drinks can be easily replicated at home for a lower cost. Still, I enjoyed the atmosphere, making it a great spot to meet up or study.
