Wren & Wolf Team Launches Doughnut Shop in Downtown Phoenix

New Doughnut Shop Creampuff Opens in Downtown Phoenix.

PHOENIX — Teddy Myers and his family have a weekend tradition: picking up a box of doughnuts. Recently, during his travels, Myers discovered unique pastry ideas involving doughnuts that he felt were missing in Arizona. “There was just another level of doughnuts we couldn’t find consistently, especially near downtown Phoenix,” he said.

Myers is an operating partner at Pretty Decent Concepts, the group behind popular eateries like Wren & Wolf and Chico Malo, as well as bars like Trophy Room and the soon-to-open Carry On. The group has expanded significantly over the past year, adding three new locations in the Arizona Center and a restaurant and bar in Tempe.

Now, Pretty Decent Concepts is launching a new venture: Creampuff Donuts. This pastry and coffee shop will open Monday in downtown Phoenix’s warehouse district at the corner of Buchanan and First streets.

A Chef-Driven Approach to Doughnuts

Creampuff Donuts will offer a variety of chef-driven pastries, all made in-house. Chef Lucia Alferez leads the pastry program, while beverage director Jax Donahue curates the drink menu. Myers emphasizes their focus on special-occasion treats, stating, “We’re taking the chef-driven approach.”

Creampuff will feature a rotating selection of six cronuts and four brioche-style doughnuts. The opening menu includes exciting flavors like s’mores, churro cheesecake, and strawberry shortcake. For special occasions, a birthday cake cronut filled with cake batter custard will be topped with strawberry icing, sprinkles, and a dollop of buttercream.

Myers explained the choice of a brioche base for their doughnuts. “It’s pillowy but a little more dense,” he said, which helps it hold up under creative toppings and fillings. The brioche options include traditional vanilla and chocolate glazes, as well as stuffed varieties like crème brûlée and pumpkin spice filled with pie custard, caramel, and cinnamon crumble.

More Than Just Doughnuts

In addition to their doughnuts, Creampuff will offer croissants and quick lunch options, including salads and savory croissants. The drinks menu will feature crafted coffees and sodas. The team has partnered with Provision Coffee to create a house blend, which will also be available at Wren & Wolf.

Myers describes the coffee offerings as having “more elevated flavors but not overly sweet bombs,” including unique options like a cardamom and rose latte or blueberry-lavender mocha. Customers can also enjoy housemade lemonade, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and bubbly beverages such as a blackberry and basil tonic and a hibiscus-grapefruit Italian soda.

A Chic Atmosphere

Creampuff Donuts will occupy the space previously held by NW Coffee in a renovated warehouse that shares space with Christ’s Church of the Valley. Since the church is only active one day a week, guests will have the opportunity to use the warehouse’s common area, which adds to the ambiance.

“It’s very chic and a bit industrial,” Myers noted, expressing excitement about opening in what he sees as an underserved market for coffee and doughnuts. He looks forward to contributing to an area that is experiencing new investments, including the upcoming Fairmont Phoenix.

Creampuff Donuts will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
