Krispy Kreme Japan Introduces Kome-Dough Kuromitsu Kinako Donut to Nationwide Permanent Menu

by Celia

Krispy Kreme Japan has announced that its rice-flour Kome-Dough donuts will become a permanent menu item. The first flavor available will be Kuromitsu Kinako. This donut is chewy and sweet, made with locally sourced rice flour and traditional Japanese ingredients such as kinako and kuromitsu syrup.

Unique Flavors with a Japanese Twist

The new Kome-Dough Kuromitsu Kinako is a fresh take on traditional Japanese dessert flavors. Krispy Kreme Japan is known for its exclusive flavors that cater to local tastes, including sakura and anko. With the Kome-Dough line, the company has changed both the dough and the fillings, using rice flour—a staple in Japanese cooking.

The term “Kome” means rice in Japanese. The Kome-Dough donuts are made from rice flour derived from domestically grown grains. Krispy Kreme explains that this innovative dough brings a subtle sweetness typical of Japanese rice. It also adds a chewy texture, enhancing the overall taste and experience of the donuts.

This isn’t Krispy Kreme Japan’s first attempt with rice flour donuts. In November 2022, the chain briefly offered donuts called “Komeco.” The positive feedback from customers led to the decision to make rice-flour donuts a permanent option under the new Kome-Dough line. The debut flavor, Kuromitsu Kinako, features a glaze of kinako (roasted soybean) and a swirl of kuromitsu (a brown sugar syrup), both beloved in Japanese desserts.

The Kome-Dough Kuromitsu Kinako will be available nationwide starting November 1, priced at 313 yen (approximately $2.25).

Krispy Kreme Japan Launches Limited-Time Premium Nagoya Donuts

In addition to the new Kome-Dough line, Krispy Kreme Japan has released two limited-time Premium Nagoya donuts. These exclusive offerings are available only at the JR Nagoya Takashimaya Krispy Kreme location in Aichi Prefecture. The new flavors, introduced on September 13, celebrate the tastes of autumn using traditional Japanese ingredients.

The first donut, the Premium Nagoya Japanese Chestnut And Butter, highlights the popularity of chestnuts in Japanese sweets. This donut features fried dough filled with sweetened chestnut paste, known as “an.” It is complemented by a thick slice of Hokkaido butter, reflecting Nagoya’s historical affinity for this combination. The fragrance of chestnuts adds to its seasonal charm.

The second option is the Premium Nagoya Brulée Glazed Hojicha donut. This donut combines Krispy Kreme’s signature original glazed donut with hojicha (roasted green tea) cream and white chocolate. It is topped with hojicha powder from Nishio City in Aichi Prefecture. Each bite delivers a mix of crunchy, soft, and creamy textures, embodying the essence of fall.

These Premium Nagoya donuts are priced at 368 yen (about $2.49) each and are available for a limited time.
