The food scene in Mosaic District is undergoing a significant transformation. Kreole Seafood and Cocktails has closed its doors permanently as of July 14, just under a year after launching its Creole-meets-Asian concept. Meanwhile, The Salty Donut, a popular Florida bakery, announced plans to open its first Virginia location in the Merrifield neighborhood.
Kreole Bids Farewell
Kreole Seafood and Cocktails, located at 2985 District Avenue, Unit 115, opened in October 2023. It was the second experimental concept introduced at this location by Common Plate Hospitality, an Alexandria-based restaurant group. The group also operates the neighboring Mexican restaurant Urbano.
Previously, Common Plate Hospitality had partnered with Franco and Noe Landini for their third Junction Bistro & Bar, which launched in 2022. Junction Bistro & Bar offered American cuisine in a setting that celebrated the area’s drive-in theater history. However, the restaurant did not gain the anticipated traction, leading executive chef Chad Sparrow to create Kreole, which promised distinctive, flavorful seafood. Unfortunately, Kreole also failed to sustain its momentum.
The Kreole team announced the closure on their front door, website, and social media, citing “much consideration and reflection” in their decision. The restaurant expressed deep gratitude to its patrons, acknowledging the support and joy they experienced over the past year.
A spokesperson for Kreole confirmed that the message addressed all relevant points, and no additional comments would be made. On social media, patrons expressed their sadness at the restaurant’s closure, sharing messages of support and farewells. One commenter, identifying as a former staff member, described the closure as “one of the saddest days of my life.”
The Salty Donut Arrives
In a more positive development, The Salty Donut will soon open at 2905 District Avenue, Unit 180, in the space previously occupied by Loyal Companion. Although promotional signs have been visible since spring, the official announcement was made this week. The new location is expected to open in late 2024 and will feature artisanal donuts and coffee.
The Salty Donut is known for its creative donut flavors, such as maple bacon and candied pistachio with white chocolate, alongside seasonal options like a red, white, and blue star for the Fourth of July.
Andy Rodriguez, CEO and founder of The Salty Donut, expressed enthusiasm about the new opening: “We’re excited to announce our entry into D.C.’s Mosaic District, our first location in this market. The neighborhood’s unique blend of creativity and community spirit makes it a perfect fit for our brand.”
Rodriguez and his now-wife Amanda Pizarro started The Salty Donut in 2015 as a pop-up in a vintage camper in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood. Since then, the brand has expanded to 16 locations across Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Texas, with additional locations planned.
