Balmoral Bakery, a beloved institution steeped in Singaporean history since 1965, may soon shut its doors for good, marking the end of an era for its loyal patrons.
Founded by a group of Hainanese brothers during pre-independence Singapore, Balmoral Bakery started as a humble street stall catering primarily to British soldiers with traditional Eurasian baked goods. Over the years, it has evolved into a cherished establishment in Clementi since 1985, under the stewardship of second-generation owner Mr. Lim Ming Noong, now 78 years old and also the head baker.
In a recent interview with CNA, Mr. Lim hinted at the bakery’s uncertain future, suggesting that retirement and declining health may force him to consider closure within the next year. Despite this possibility, Mr. Lim remains hopeful about finding a suitable successor, even outside his own family, expressing a readiness to pass on the legacy.
Known for its extensive array of baked treats, Balmoral Bakery is renowned for its signature puffs such as Chicken Pie (S$1.80), Beef Curry Puff (S$1.60), Chicken Samosa (S$1.60), and Sausage Rolls (S$1.60). Other popular offerings include Mini Cupcakes (S$0.60) and Pandan Chiffon Cake (S$1.60), each serving as a nostalgic reminder of its longstanding presence in the community.
