A local donut shop has reopened after being forced to close earlier this month due to health code violations, according to an official retail food safety inspection report. After a follow-up inspection, the store was allowed to reopen.
During the initial visit to Master Donuts, health inspectors reportedly found “five dying rats” stuck underneath the shelves where flour was stored. In addition, more than 20 rat droppings were found on the floor under large kitchen equipment and under dry shelves.
During the follow-up inspection, the report noted that all cleaning and sanitation requirements were completed, and no live or dead rats or droppings were found. The store has placed sticky traps throughout the facility and has an annual contract with a pest control company, the report states.
Other repairs are still required at the facility, including repairing broken tiles, filling gaps between range hood filters in the vent hood, and properly patching holes between double-bowl sinks to ensure there are no gaps. Repairs usually take longer.
The former owner of Master Donuts, Vongdee Cheak, recently transferred ownership to a new owner after the company decided to retire. The new owner said in a previous interview that Cheak had run Master Donuts for 31 years and still occasionally visits.
The donut shop is open daily from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located at 7601 Sunrise Boulevard in a shopping center anchored by the SAFE Credit Union.
