Dooped Donuts Shuts Down After Struggling with Traffic and Lease

by Celia

Dooped Donuts, Detroit’s only vegan donut shop, has announced its closure after a few years of success, leaving some local fans disappointed. The shop, founded in 2020 by Eastern Market Brewing Co., started by making vegan donuts in a commercial kitchen and selling them via pre-order, at events, and eventually opening a brick-and-mortar store in 2022 on Broadway in downtown Detroit. A second location was also opened in June at Eastern Market Brewing Co.’s new taproom and pizzeria, Elephant & Co. in the Cass Corridor.

Dayne Bartscht, founder of Eastern Market Brewing Co., shared that the decision to pause Dooped Donuts came after the lease expired at the downtown location, combined with low foot traffic at the Elephant & Co. shop. The team was producing around 1,500 donuts each week, including classic flavors like chocolate with sprinkles and more unique options like strawberry basil. However, Bartscht explained that the core team’s focus had shifted away from the donut venture.
