Houston-based Shipley Do-Nuts, which currently operates 370 units across 12 states, is expanding its reach eastward. This week, the popular donut chain is celebrating the opening of its first North Carolina location, with plans to open another store in Virginia by the end of April.
The chain’s growth has also extended into the Mid-Atlantic region, where franchisee Mid-Atlantic Do-Nuts operates three units in Maryland. Co-founded by cousins Brian Lemek and John Egan, Mid-Atlantic Do-Nuts signed a 25-unit deal in 2022 to open stores throughout Maryland and Virginia. After debuting their first location in early 2023, the franchise quickly expanded, opening a second store in November and a third shortly after.
Keith Sizemore, senior vice president of franchise development, noted that Maryland has become a proving ground for Shipley Do-Nuts, showcasing the brand’s ability to attract fans even far from its Houston base. “You couldn’t get much further away from home base,” Sizemore said.
Shipley Do-Nuts plans to open 48 locations nationwide in 2025, doubling the 24-unit growth seen in the previous year.
