Mossman will be giving away 100 free “DONUT WAIT” donuts on December 6 to help raise awareness about cyclone preparedness. The giveaway is part of a campaign by the Douglas Shire Council, aimed at encouraging the community to get ready for the upcoming wet season.
The promotion, in partnership with local business Duke’s, will start at 7 a.m. at Duke’s shop on Front Street (1/5 Front Street) and continue at the Mossman Administration Building (Customer Service) from 8:30 a.m.
Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon emphasized the importance of the campaign in getting people to think about cyclone readiness.
“We want everyone to be prepared for the wet season, and we hope the donut giveaway will spark conversations about how to stay safe during a cyclone,” Mayor Scomazzon said.
To claim a free donut, participants will need to answer a simple question: “How many litres of water per person should you pack in your emergency kit?”
For those unsure of the answer, the Mayor encourages people to visit the Douglas Disaster Dashboard for vital information on cyclone preparedness.
Duke’s owners, Mike and Sally Miller, shared their personal experience with the devastating floods caused by Cyclone Jasper last year.
“We were hit hard by the floodwaters, but seeing the community come together to help each other through the cleanup was a positive takeaway,” Mike Miller said.
Sally Miller added that the business, as well as the Mossman community, learned valuable lessons from the disaster.
“Having lived here for 30 years, I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s important that we continue to talk about what happened and stay prepared,” she said.
The DONUT WAIT giveaway serves as a reminder to the community to take action before it’s too late, with the goal of ensuring everyone is ready for the cyclone season ahead.
