HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) – A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Tuesday in Houghton to celebrate the opening of the new combined Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin Robbins location.
The event, hosted by the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce, drew dozens of community members eager to enjoy doughnuts and ice cream. The store officially opened its doors on October 15.
Kevin Kane, Regional Manager, explained that the franchise acquired the rights to operate in the western half of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula several years ago. “Dunkin’ Brands purchased Baskin Robbins about a decade ago, and we’ve been opening several combination stores since,” Kane said. “Houghton seemed like the perfect location for the latest one.”
The turnout for the grand opening has exceeded expectations. Kane reported that Houghton’s new store is now the second largest in the franchise, following a location that opened during a busy Fourth of July weekend. “The response has been incredible,” Kane said. “The community has been extremely welcoming. I’ve spent several weeks in Houghton, even before the opening, and the people here are amazing.”
Looking ahead, Kane mentioned plans to open four to five more Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin Robbins stores in the Upper Peninsula. Locations under consideration include Manistique, Ironwood, and Escanaba.
