MILTON, Del. — Dunkin’ Donuts is set to appear on the agenda for the Milton Planning and Zoning Commission meeting on October 15. This comes as a McDonald’s is already under construction on Broadkill Road, indicating a growing interest in chain restaurants in the area.
Dunkin’ plans to build its new store at 403 Broadkill Road, directly across from Po’ Boys Creole Restaurant. The proposal has been designed by the Milford-based engineering firm Davis, Bowen, and Friedel Inc.
The approval process for McDonald’s took nearly two years, from proposal to groundbreaking. Dunkin’ Donuts, which is the largest coffee and donut chain in the U.S., already has over ten locations in Sussex County. The Milton Planning Commission meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., where they will review Dunkin’s concept plan. The site will be divided into two parcels for the C-1 zoning district.
The proposed Dunkin’ Donuts will feature a drive-thru and include 36 parking spaces, two of which will be designated for handicapped access. The building is planned to be 2,860 square feet on just over two acres.
The potential arrival of Dunkin’ Donuts has sparked discussions among Milton residents. Jonathan Downing expressed support for more businesses in town, stating, “I think that’s a good idea. Milton needs to put a couple more little businesses here instead of a bunch of housing. Give people other places to go.”
Site plans also indicate space for another fast-food restaurant. Property owner Ben Gordy mentioned that several fast-food chains are being considered, although he could not disclose specific names at this time. No decisions have been made regarding what will be built next to Dunkin’ Donuts.
Local resident Sharon Botz shared her thoughts on the development: “I do like the quaint little town, but I’m fine with it just so we don’t have to build anymore.” While many residents welcome the new Dunkin’ Donuts, others feel it could detract from the town’s charm.
As Milton navigates this balance between local character and big business, the outcome remains to be seen.
