Krispy Kreme Plans Return to Minnesota After Years Away.
Fridley, Minn. — Krispy Kreme is set to make a comeback in Minnesota, years after the doughnut chain closed its doors in the state.
City officials in Fridley report that Krispy Kreme has submitted a building permit for a new location at 5696 University Avenue. While the permit is still pending approval, it is expected to be finalized by the end of the month.
If all goes as planned, the new store could open in late spring or early summer of next year.

Since 2008, Minnesota has been without a Krispy Kreme store. However, doughnut lovers have found ways to satisfy their cravings. In 2019, college student Jayson Gonzalez drove to Iowa to purchase Krispy Kreme doughnuts, bringing them back to Minnesota for resale. Initially, the company asked Gonzalez to stop these trips. After social media backlash, they changed their stance and even supported his business with a donation.
Earlier this year, McDonald’s announced that it would start selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts. The initial launch is limited to Kentucky and Indiana, but the fast-food giant plans to offer the pastries nationwide by the end of 2026.
“The top request we receive from consumers every day is, ‘please bring Krispy Kreme to my town,'” said Krispy Kreme CEO Charlesworth in a statement regarding the McDonald’s partnership.
Currently, Krispy Kreme operates over 300 locations across the United States.
