Classic Boise Donut Store DK Donuts to Close After 40 Years。
After nearly four decades of serving the Boise community, DK Donuts is set to close its doors for good. The closure, which has been the subject of speculation since spring, was confirmed by employees to BoiseDev on Thursday. A sign posted inside the shop announces that the last day of operation will be October 27.
A Bittersweet Farewell
The shop’s owner, Angkearot Long, had previously announced plans for renovations and a ten-year lease extension at its State Street location. However, it appears that negotiations with the landlord have fallen through. Long revealed that the landlord demanded extensive upgrades to the building, including the heating and air systems, as well as the parking lot. He lamented the costs associated with replacing the parking lot, stating, “It’s so expensive to replace a parking lot.”
Future Plans
Following the landlord’s notice, DK Donuts was given just 30 days to vacate the premises, leading to the scheduled closure date. Despite the impending shutdown, Long is optimistic about the future. He mentioned that plans are in motion to secure a new location in Boise, although the specifics are still being finalized. Additionally, DK Donuts is on track to open a new location in downtown Nampa, with an anticipated launch early next year.
A Beloved Boise Institution
Since its opening in the 1980s, DK Donuts has become a beloved staple in Boise, known for its delicious offerings and welcoming atmosphere. The shop has attracted a loyal following, including notable visitors like John Calipari, the head basketball coach at the University of Arkansas, who frequented the establishment during his visits for the NCAA tournament in 2018. Before DK Donuts took over, the location was home to Winchell’s Donuts.
As the community prepares to say goodbye to this cherished donut shop, many are hopeful for the brand’s continued legacy in a new location.
